TLDR: Watch Episode 1 here.
We’ll start our Live From the Garage series by introducing Logan Freevol, a 21-year-old student at Belmont who not only produces music for his friends but has also started writing and gigging for himself. Logan stopped by the Garage this past week and performed two of his original songs, “Smile Like Jay” and “Blame the Planets.” After years of producing for other acts, such as Caroline Carter, love pac, and David Hilderhoff, Logan recently released an EP of his own called From the Little Hollow: “My own music has been something that I’m only now starting to pursue more seriously. My main gig has been production and playing with other people and supporting them and their artistry, but this March I put out an EP, and that was when I first started gigging and doing stuff like this.”
The journey has been a long one in the making. Logan first started playing guitar at age 7 and joked, “It all went downhill from there.” Over time, he’s picked up a few more instruments, but editing and producing for others has always been his forte. Regardless of whether he’s producing or writing, Logan has gradually found a sense of belonging and peace in his work. “I find a lot of inspiration from the world around me…I spend a lot of time trying to make myself more present and trying to observe what’s right in front of me rather than extraneous ideas and little things, just trying to be a bit more in the moment.”
Logan also mentioned that the skill and passion of his peers are what makes him continue to love what he does: “I’m very thankful to be able to produce some of the softer Indie stuff as well as Dance and Rock with others—even some Country now and then, so it’s sort of all over the place…every time I produce for others, I have this realization like, ‘holy crap’, I’m making the music that I actually want to listen to.” Logan went on to say that, had he not helped create the music his friends were making, he’d still be listening to it every day. In other words, he’s passionate about producing because he loves the music he gets to work with—a pretty sweet deal for a producer if you ask me.
While the future is still unknown for the graduating senior (welcome to the club!), he knows that music is priority number one. For the time being, he says he’ll continue to pursue the “producer/artist situation” and ultimately wants to be a full-time freelance producer. “I’m working on my project and at the same time I’m putting every ounce and fiber of my being into making records, and hopefully I’ll be able to do that indefinitely.”
So, if you find yourself looking for a producer anytime soon…you know who to call.
